Labor Day, celebrated on the first Monday of September, is a federal holiday that recognizes and honors the contributions of the American workforce.

To prepare for the holiday, here’s information about businesses and services that will remain open, have adjusted hours or be closed completely.

Grocery stores and supermarkets

The majority of grocery stores will remain open, including Walmart, Kroger, Tom Thumb and Trader Joe’s. Hours may vary by store, so check with your local store before heading over.

Banks and government offices

Banks in Texas will be closed on Labor Day. Federal offices, such as the United States Postal Service and other shipping services, will remain shuttered.

Schools and libraries

Most schools, private and public, will also be closed.

Public libraries will be closed, but members can access material on the Dallas Public Library website 24/7.

Public transportation

Most Dallas Area Rapid Transit services will operate on a weekend schedule for Labor Day. The Trinity Railway Express will not be in service.

DART’s customer information center will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for trip-planning needs, while administrative offices will be closed.

DART’s paratransit services will operate on a Saturday schedule, and the paratransit scheduling center will be unavailable.

On Monday, the city of Dallas will collect trash, recycling and brush/bulky items from residential customers as usual. However, administrative offices will be closed in observance of the holiday.

McCommas Bluff Landfill and transfer stations will be open during regular business hours for self-service disposal.
