The Los Angeles Police Department Monday released some details of its investigation into an officer shooting, which injured a man in the Jefferson Park neighborhood of South Los Angeles over the weekend.
Police said when officers were conducting patrol inside a liquor store at the corner of 9th Avenue and West Jefferson Boulevard at around 1:10 a.m. Sunday, they spotted a man who appeared to be concealing a firearm.
When the officers tried to speak with the man, who later was identified as 33- year-old Malik Salaah, the suspect removed a gun from his waistband and fired multiple rounds at the officers inside the store and as he was exiting the business, the LAPD said.
To look for Salaah, who ran away on foot, police set up a perimeter and found him within minutes. The LAPD added an unloaded 9mm pistol, at slide lock with a seated high-capacity magazine, was found at the scene and submitted as evidence in the case.
During the process of taking him into custody, he was shot by bullets fired by officers. Police said they rendered aid until first responders from the LA Fire Department arrived.
Salaah, who was said to be in stable condition after being taken to a hospital, was absentee-booked for the attempted murder of a peace officer.
No other officers or bystanders were injured during the shooting.
