New federal rules are tightening who qualifies and adding work requirements, many Western New York families rely on SNAP to put food on the table.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Many Western New York families rely on SNAP to put food on the table. Now, new federal rules are tightening who qualifies and adding work requirements.

As of right now, the impact on local residents who rely on SNAP benefits isn’t yet clear. FeedMore WNY said they’re still waiting on guidance from the state, which in turn is waiting on the USDA. That hasn’t come yet, despite the fact the changes were supposed to go into effect on September 1st.

Congress recently approved new rules that expand work requirements and tighten eligibility for snap. Adults up to age 64 must now work, volunteer, or take part in training at least 80 hours a month. Parents with children over 14 are no longer automatically exempt, and certain immigrant groups face stricter rules. For the first time, states, not just the federal government, will have to cover part of the cost.

Feedmore WNY said families are nervous and confused about the changes, and some are hesitant to ask for help. Staff said it’s important for anyone in need to reach out because help is still available.

“The most common questions are, ‘what’s happening with SNAP and am I eligible?’ And the answers to those are: There are changes. They are being rolled out slowly. We are getting advice from federal government to New York State, and NYS is advising us. To find out if you are eligible, we will walk you through the process and that way you don’t have to ask the question or figure it out yourselves,” Collin Bishop, chief communication officer at Feedmore WNY said.

While the new requirements are now law, New York is still waiting on clarity about how they’ll be enforced. Until then, pantries like this one are doing everything they can to keep families supported.
