The parents of a teenage girl who was struck by a hit-and-run driver in the Carmel Valley area spoke out on Wednesday.
The incident happened shortly after a Torrey Pines High School football game on Aug 22 in the parking lot of 3500 Del Mar Heights Road.
“Two cars were involved, and as my daughter and her friends used the crosswalk, the first car accelerated into the group, hitting our daughter, inches away from driving over her head and narrowly missing her friends,” said Emma, the victim’s mother.
The girl was treated at the hospital for minor injuries, according to the San Diego Police Department.
The victim was treated at a local hospital for her injuries, according to the San Diego Police Department.
Her mother believes the teen could have lost her life that night.
“Based on the disturbing video footage, it is clear that how much more catastrophic this could’ve been for multiple families. What was meant to be a fun night with friends after a high school football game turned into a parent’s greatest fear,” Emma said.
There is an active investigation by SDPD.
“The suspect is a known juvenile. The investigation has determined the charge will be for ‘hit and run’ and not ‘assault with a deadly weapon.’ The suspect is not in custody and the investigation is on-going with the Community and Youth Services Division,” the department said in a statement to NBC 7.
The family’s lawyer is asking anyone in the community with information to step forward.
“I imagine there’s a lot more evidence out there that we have not gathered at this point, so we’re asking people right now in the community. If anyone has any information, please come forward,” Michael Goldfaden said.
Goldfaden says there may be civil action in the future.
