SAN ANTONIO – It’s being called the Super Bowl of San Antonio — the biggest match-up in Thursday Night Lights history.

In 17 years of TNL, this is the first time we’ve had a No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown, as Brennan takes on Smithson Valley.

Brennan, a 6A powerhouse, squares off against Smithson Valley, the defending 5A state champions. Last year, Brennan handed the Rangers one of their only two losses before Smithson Valley went on a title run.

Head coach Larry Hill reminded us today that after five games last year, his team was just 3–2. “Did anybody see us winning a state championship at that point? The answer is no. But we did.”

Last week, the defending 5A state champs kicked off the season with a resounding 62-6 rout of Roosevelt at Rangers Stadium.

Now, Smithson Valley is ready for another big test — and it comes against perennial power Brennan.

Junior Caleb Peagler had two first quarter touchdowns to lead Smithson Valley to a 42-0 halftime lead. Peagler finished with five touchdowns against Roosevelt.

Brennan opened the season with a close 21-13 win over Reagan.

Quarterback Cayden Glass finished the game 7-of-11 for 124 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for another score in the win.

Two of the best coaches in the state, Steve Basore and Larry Hill, bring programs built on sustained excellence and mutual respect.

Then, they dive into Week 1 of college football: did we overhype Texas and Arch Manning? Can UTSA contend in the American after a tough loss to Texas A&M?
