A Dallas company is pulling nearly 3 million roof-mounted attic fans off the market due to a defect affecting the fan’s motor.
DALLAS — A Dallas-based company issued a recall for 3 million roof fans at risk of catching fire, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The recall impacts electric motors for gable- and roof-mounted attic fans distributed by Dallas-based Air Vent Inc. The fans were sold from August 2003 to December 2013 at stores and wholesale retailers nationwide, federal officials said.
The fans were sold for about $74 and $92.
The recalled motor’s safety cutoff may pose a risk of short-circuiting and creating a fire hazard while in use, federal officials said. The affected motors have a distinctive vent pattern, officials said. The vents on the affected motors align on the outer ring of the motor bell.
Customers with the recalled fans should stop using them immediately and contact Air Vent for a refund, federal officials said. Customers will be asked to fill out the online registration and verification form with photos of the recalled attic fan motor.
The company has received 159 reports of burning or fires related to the recalled attic fan motors, officials said. No injuries have been reported.
Model numbers DOW-136-0-34-XIN, DOW-136-0-26-XIN, DOW-136-0-40-XIN, DOW-136-0-40-XIN-3/4”, and D-RE-PSC-127/20-4P1SP were included in the recall.
