Annie Thorisdottir and CrossFit Reykjavik have been synonymous for years, ever since she became a co-owner of the CrossFit affiliate in 2010. That, however, has come to an end. Thorisdottir and her co-owners sold the 15-year CrossFit affiliate to a new ownership group last month.

Bjorgvin Karl Gudmundsson, the 11-time CrossFit Games veteran, is part of the new ownership team of CrossFit Reykjavik. According to one of the new co-owners, Throstur
Olason, BKG will take on the role of head coach and head of programming for CrossFit Reykjavik.

“We’re really excited about the bright future of CrossFit in Iceland – continuing to build on the strong foundation already here and creating even more opportunities for the community to grow and thrive,” explained Olason.

While the reasons for Thorisdottir’s departure have not been made public, it might not be surprising given her statements earlier this year regarding how she was disappointed in CrossFit’s response and handling of Lazar Ðukić’s death.

Thorisdottir was one of the seven athletes who signed the Professional Fitness Athletes’ Association’s (PFAA) list of demands that included the removal of Dave Castro from leading the CrossFit Games.

This past February, Thorisdottir shared that she would not participate in the 2025 CrossFit Open. Thorisdottir had registered for every Open since it began in 2011.

Last year, CrossFit Reykjavik had 58 members register for the 2025 CrossFit Open, down from 165 in 2024. According to Olason, CrossFit Reykjavik has always promoted the Open. However, Thorisdottir’s absence likely contributed to the decline in the participation.

Both BKG and Olason participated in the Open last year and it appears the new ownership team is looking to continue to build the strong foundation of the gym within the CrossFit ecosystem. Could that result in greater participation in the Open next year?
