Jacob MacDonald underwent successful hip surgery on Tuesday and will be out for five to six months.

The announcement comes just two weeks before the start of training camp. MacDonald, 32, is coming off a whopping 31-goal season in the AHL with the Colorado Eagles as a defenseman. He finished with a career-high 55 points despite missing time and only dressing in 63 games.

MacDonald’s surgery was performed by Dr. Stephanie Mayer at the UC Health Steadman Hawkins Clinic. This isn’t the same doctor that performed Logan O’Connor’s hip procedure three months ago. O’Connor’s timeline was also announced as 5-6 months at time, although he’s been skating at Family Sports in recent weeks.

As for MacDonald, the unfortunate lengthy recovery will keep him out likely until right around the Olympics. The AHL regular, who also has 135 games of NHL experience, was an alternate captain for the Eagles last season. The team finished 2024-25 with a 43-21-5-3 record and a Pacific Division-leading 94 points.

MacDonald led the team in goals and was second in points.
