Jalen Hurts scored two rushing touchdowns as the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Dallas Cowboys, 24-20, in the NFL season opener on Thursday night at Lincoln Financial Field. The game was delayed for about an hour due to a weather delay as storms moved through the region.
Hurts sealed the win for the Eagles with a clutch third-down run late in the fourth quarter.
Hurts completed 19 of his 23 passes for 152 yards. He also scrambled multiple times and recorded 65 yards on 11 carries.
While Hurts made some nice throws, he wasn’t able to connect with his top receiver until late in the game. A.J. Brown had zero targets and didn’t record a catch until the fourth quarter. Jahan Dotson led the Eagles in receiving with three catches for 59 yards. Dallas Goedert had seven catches for 44 yards.
Saquon Barkley scored Philadelphia’s other touchdown of the night on a 10-yard run at the end of the second quarter. Barkley recorded 60 yards on 18 carries and had four catches for 24 yards.
The game didn’t get off to the best start for the Eagles as defensive tackle Jalen Carter was ejected before the first play of the game for spitting on Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott. A video on the broadcast showed that Prescott initially spat in Carter’s direction before the ejection.
Prescott completed 21 of his 34 passes for 188 yards, with CeeDee Lamb catching the majority of the passes. Lamb had seven catches for 110 yards, but he had some crucial drops at the end of the game.
Midway through the third quarter, former Eagles running back Miles Sanders had a 49-yard run that set-up the Cowbys deep into Philadelphia territory with Dallas down 24-20.
Several plays later, Sanders had another carry but rookie linebacker Jihaad Campbell forced a fumble, which was recovered by cornerback Quinyon Mitchell. The play stopped Dallas from taking the lead or potentially adding a field goal, which would’ve made it a one point game.
Javonte Williams scored two rushing touchdowns for the Cowboys.
Eagles Pro Bowl left guard Landon Dickerson, who was dealing with a back injury, exited the game in the second half. Eagles fullback Ben VanSumeren was ruled out for the game on the opening kickoff with a knee injury.
Jake Elliott booted in a 58-yard field goal in the third quarter.
The Eagles will face the Kansas City Chiefs on the road in Week 2 in a Super Bowl rematch.
