ONEIDA COUNTY- The National Weather Service is expected to send a storm survey team to the Ava, NY area Friday, September 5 in the wake of what was a likely tornado Thursday evening.

At around 6:00 p.m., the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for Boonville, NY and Northeastern Oneida County.

The warning came amidst a series of rain and thunderstorms that passed through the general Central and Northern New York regions.

Results of the storm analysis are expected to be released later on Friday. “The storm started rotating very quickly with very little warning,” said WKTV Chief Meteorologist Bill Kardas.

“Unfortunately, we’re learning that’s how most tornadoes behave in Upstate New York. Many spin up quickly, produce isolated damage, and last for a matter of minutes. There are many times when straight line winds produce more damage than tornadoes.”

We will follow up with any new developments from the National Weather Service and their storm survey team.
