BROOKLYN, NY — After a nearly five-year run, Sippy Cafe will be closing permanently amid financial hardships, according to social media posts by the restaurant owners.

In an Aug. 8 Instagram post, the team behind Sippy Cafe said they’ll be pouring their final cup at their cozy storefront at 200 Franklin Street, between India and Huron Streets. The closure comes as a result of rent prices that have doubled, and nearly tripled, over the years, the shop said.

The shop, which opened in 2021, was founded by Cerina Shao and Judy Zhu with a vision to bring an Asian-American twist to the classic coffee shop experience. Their unique menu featured standout drinks like the Black Sesame Latte and Ube Latte, alongside favorites like the Iced Strawberry Latte and Lavender Latte, blending innovative flavors with traditional coffee offerings.

“As we prepare to close this chapter, please accept our deepest and eternal gratitude. Thank you to every person who stopped in for a cup, shared a kind word, recommended us to a friend, or even offered constructive criticism — because of you, we are a better us,” they wrote.

According to the owners, Sippy Cafe plans to close “sometime mid-October” and must return their keys by the end of the month.

The closure only impacts their Greenpoint location, they clarified, noting that the Brooklyn Heights shop at 153 Remsen Street will stay open for the foreseeable future.

“We’ve celebrated milestones, shared in your everyday moments, and grown alongside you in ways we could have never imagined. Even for those who were customers early on and have moved out of Greenpoint, we never forgot you,” they added. “Though we’re saying goodbye to this chapter, we believe the story of Sippy is far from over. Whether our next adventure is near or far, we hope you’ll join us when the time comes.”
