New York City Mayor Eric Adams is set to make an announcement about the future of his campaign on Friday afternoon.

What To Know

• Once-strong incumbent weakened: Mayor Eric Adams, now running as an independent, has seen his support slump into the single digits, prompting growing pressure to withdraw. There have also been recent reports that Adams could leave the race and join President Donald Trump’s administration. Billionaire Bill Ackman has even publicly urged Adams to step aside and endorse former Gov. Andrew Cuomo as the most viable challenger to frontrunner Zohran Mamdani.

Democratic race shakes up: Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani remains the clear leader, polling in the high 30s to low 40s, while Andrew Cuomo lags in the mid-20s. Mamdani’s edge reflects both his grassroots campaign momentum and his appeal as a progressive alternative.

Field shrinking, calls for consolidation escalate: Independent candidate Jim Walden has dropped out and called on remaining contenders to unite behind a single challenger to Mamdani. Despite this and President Trump’s push for a head-to-head matchup, both Adams and Republican Curtis Sliwa remain firmly in the race.

Adams addresses speculation around his staying in mayoral race

Eric Adams announced he is staying in the New York Mayoral Race as he addressed the rumors and speculation that he will drop out.

“I’m running for re-election and I’m going to tell New Yorkers every day why I believe I should be the mayor of the city of New York in 2026.

“And yes, I hear the polls. I hear the comments, I hear the pundits. But those are the same polls that stated eight weeks and Andrew Cuomo was up by 36 points.”
