ANIMAL KINGDOM — I often watch my cat chase the light from a laser around my living room, frantically hunting the little red dot. I was surprised by how different that experience was from watching these four otters chase a butterfly back and forth across their enclosure.
My cat is on the hunt, having fun but intent on getting that dot at all costs, alternating between waiting and pouncing. These otters are jumping, watching and running as well, but it seems like they are acting out of pure enjoyment.
It looks like the butterfly has gone out of view, and the game will end at one point, but those otters still see it and run along, staying under it.
Despite the otters’ attempts at jumping into the air to catch it, maybe getting a quarter of the height they’d need, the butterfly doesn’t seem to be worried about its fate at all. If it were, it could just leave. Maybe it is playing along?
I watched this video quite a few times, and I think I could keep watching it on repeat. The music from Disney’s Animal Kingdom in the background definitely doesn’t hurt either. And although it was put on YouTube about five years ago, the video has been picked up in the last few months by other accounts and made into shorts that others have shared on multiple platforms.
It’s a simple video, but it definitely represents one of the better sides of the internet — I hope you enjoy it.
