Two words of free advice on Javonte Williams, Cowboys Nation, from a Grading The Week (GTW) staff that knows:
Sell high.
Seriously.
Williams, drafted to be the Broncos’ franchise back in 2021 and cast aside after 2024, had a fine Dallas debut on Thursday night against the Eagles. We tipped our caps and our nacho dip.
The former UNC Tar Heel rambled for 54 yards on 15 carries with two catches for another 10 yards while — and this was the part that sent the hearts of fantasy football owners aflutter — scoring twice.
Broncos Country’s seen that before. Oh, not the multiple rushing TDs in a game. Well, once. The 25-year-old Williams — who, full disclosure, we liked a lot personally, especially during his “No Takis” phase — pulled that off last October in New Orleans as the Broncos pummeled the Saints, 33-10.
Williams played in 55 games over four seasons with Denver. We counted only three games, including a playoff appearance, in which he managed to score more than one TD in a tilt.
Cowboys fans might want to keep that little nugget in mind.
Javonte Williams’ post-Broncos debut — B-minus.
Williams never was a burner. At his best, and that was as a rookie, he was the most fun to watch while leaning forward and lowering his shoulder with a full head of steam. Javonte had the uncanny ability to run at a level lower than his assailants while, at the same time, maintaining his feet, keeping his balance and not letting his knees scrape the turf. Usually.
But when holes dried up, so did his yards. Take away an 11-yard jaunt, and on the other 16 times Williams saw the rock Thursday, he averaged 3.3 yards per touch and 3.1 yards per carry.
Which reminds us of something else we’d whisper to Jerry Jones about Javonte: After surgery, Williams was left with only three gears — and the third is “reverse.”
That’s OK, our cousin the Cowboys fan rebuts. He’s a workhorse back. Slow and steady while Uncle Jerry wins the race, right?
Yeah, not so fast on that one. Williams hasn’t put together consecutive games of 15 carries or more since Week 8-Week 9 of the 2023 season. He managed to pull that off just four times over four seasons in Denver.
Hey, the GTW crew hopes Javonte carries your fantasy team to a big opening week. But best set the bar low. As long as you don’t think of Williams as much more than a 5-foot-10, 222-pound fullback, you won’t be disappointed.
Bob Stitt’s (second) Mines opener — A.
Bob Stitt, offensive guru, wins his return to collegiate head coaching on a strip-sack in the end zone for a safety. Who says the football gods don’t have a sense of humor?
Stitt got his second tenure as Colorado School of Mines off to a winning start late this last Thursday night with a 33-31 victory in the Orediggers’ season opener at West Texas A&M.
It was Stitt’s first win as a college head coach since Nov. 11, 2017, when he was running the Montana football program. In the penultimate game of that season, his Grizzlies hammered UNC in Missoula, Mont., 44-14.
Which wasn’t to say Mines’ offense didn’t have its moments — QB Joseph Capra threw for 195 yards and three scores. But the saving grace came from defensive lineman Justin Vaughn, who stripped West Texas A&M signal-caller RJ Martinez in Martinez’s end zone. The ball would scoot out of the back of the end zone for the safety and the win, Stitt’s 109th with Mines.
