The 2025 NFL season certainly wasn’t a pretty start for the Kansas City Chiefs. Starting wide receiver Xavier Worthy (shoulder) was knocked out of the game when he and tight end Travis Kelce collided on crossing routes on the game’s opening third down.
That, among other things, contributed to the Chiefs falling behind their AFC West rivals, the Los Angeles Chargers, 13-6 at the half. Kansas City was able to tack on an extra three at the halftime buzzer with a 59-yard field goal from kicker Harrison Butker thanks to Los Angeles rookie running back Omarion Hampton. The first-round pick ran out of bounds on the Chargers’ final third-down play before their 36-yard field goal that put them up, 13-3, with 45 seconds left in the half.
Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert came out out on fire to begin his 2025 season. He completed 12 of his 18 throws for 171 yards and a touchdown from five yards out to 2023 first-round wide receiver Quentin Johnston, who caught two passes for 38 yards in the opening two quarters. Hampton, meanwhile, rushed for 31 yards on eight carries.
For as strong of a half as Herbert had, Mahomes and the Chiefs have been almost equally as off-kilter. They began the game with three consecutive punts, including an opening drive three-and-out following the injury to Worthy. Mahomes finished the half with 98 yards on 12 of 21 passing. And it wasn’t just Mahomes who was a little off. On a third-and-1, Chiefs All-Pro center Creed Humphrey snapped the football when Mahomes wasn’t looking, which resulted in no-gain on the play after Mahomes flipped the football to wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown.
The Chargers outgained the Chiefs by nearly 100 yards (211-133) thanks to Kansas City being 0-fpr-7 on third down, and Los Angeles will begin the second half with the football. Will Herbert and Co. bury the Chiefs early in the second half, or will Mahomes and Kelce mount another magical comeback?
