Hancock College offensive lineman Makai Sat and defensive end Daron Lewis Jr. have signed with four-year football programs.
Sat has signed with NCAA Division 1 Iowa State, and Lewis has signed with NCAA Division 2 Henderson State, which is located in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.
“I chose Iowa State because I love the culture that they have created over there, and I really connected with the offensive line coach (Ryan Clanton) throughout the recruiting process,” Sat said in a Hancock news release.
“It has always been a dream of mine to play with a team of this caliber and to compete at such a high level.”
Sat graduated from St. Joseph. Sat was an All-Northern League First Team selection his sophomore season at Hancock and appeared in all 10 regular season games. Sat was a Second Team All-Northern League selection his freshman year.
“Going to Hancock helped me grow as both a player and a student,” said Sat. “My family has a lot of connections to Hancock, and there is a big Polynesian community here that I was able to connect with.
“AHC was the perfect step in the journey for me right after high school,” said Sat. “I was able to expand my skills and play against some of the toughest talent there is at the junior college level.”
Lewis said in the release, “I chose Henderson State because they were a team that showed a lot of interest in me from the start of my recruiting process.
“When I took my visit, it just felt like home and somewhere that I could thrive, not only in football but throughout all aspects of life for the next two years.”
Lewis is a Michigan native. He amassed a total of 22 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 10 appearances his sophomore year. Lewis racked up 29 tackles and 4.0 sacks as a freshman.
“My time at AHC challenged me in many aspects of my life, but in a positive way – especially coming back to play at 23 years old after a few years off,” Lewis said.
“Coach Bubba (Varela), coach (Rick) Aguilar, and the rest of the staff helped me push myself. They helped me figure out when I still have more left in the tank even when I didn’t think I did, especially after our conditioning work.”
Aguilar is the Hancock head football coach. Varela is a Hancock defensive line coach.
