The National Weather Service issued severe thunderstorm warnings in the Tri-State Area as a strong system brought torrential rain and threatened to cause flash flooding, tornadoes and hail Saturday.

The NWS said the storm system moving through New York, New Jersey and Connecticut could cause isolated tornadoes, hail the size of quarters and wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour.

The entire Tri-State Area is under a severe thunderstorm watch until 8 p.m. Earlier severe thunderstorm warnings across the area expired, but more weather alerts could be issued later today.

Warmth, high humidity Saturday

This weekend is a tale of two seasons.

On Saturday, expect highs in the mid to upper 80s. Perhaps a 90-degree reading or two will be observed.

High humidity will stick around as well, making it feel oppressive at times.

After a bright and quiet morning, clouds will bubble up ahead of our next front.

Damaging winds, torrential downpours possible Saturday PM

We’ve issued a First Alert Weather Day for the afternoon and evening hours as showers and storms develop. Primetime for storm activity looks to be between 1-6 p.m.

Damaging winds, small hail, torrential downpours and even some isolated tornadoes are possible hazards associated with the storms.

With such a humid airmass in place, the storms will be capable of producing copious amounts of rainfall in a short period of time, which may lead to flash flooding.

Autumn feel on Sunday

After the severe storms roll through the area, rounds of residual showers are anticipated to linger from Saturday night through Sunday morning. They may linger further into the day on Sunday for the East End.

Total rainfall from Saturday into Sunday, is expected to range from 1-3 inches, with some locations receiving locally higher amounts.

Following a very summery day on Saturday, Sunday is looking to feel more like fall. Highs will struggle to get past the low 70s, and persistent breeze will add a chill to the air. We lose the humidity as well.

After that, next week looks like another sunny, rain-free stretch with temperatures in the 70s. Unfortunately, that won’t help with the increasing drought conditions despite this weekend’s rain.

Have a great weekend and just keep an eye to the sky heading into Saturday afternoon.
