PITTSBURGH, Pa. — The Pepperdine women’s volleyball team (3-3) was swept by the Jacksonville Dolphins (4-1) to wrap up their time in Pittsburgh, Pa. on Saturday afternoon.

Using good serving and a strong block, the Dolphins gave the Waves’ offense fits all afternoon. Although Pepperdine posted a better hitting percentage of .308 to Jacksonville’s .260 clip, the Dolphins had nine total blocks to the Waves’ six, plus they took advantage of timely Pepperdine errors to pull away.

Chloe Pravednikov led the way for the Waves with 10 kills and four total blocks. Vanessa Polk added a season-high eight kills, while Ella Piskorz finished with a team-high five blocks to go along with four kills. In the back row, Laine Briggs led the way with 11 digs and tied her career high with four service aces.

In the first set, both teams played close until Jacksonville flipped the script with a 5-0 run to take a 19-14 lead. Staring down a seven-point deficit, the Waves staged a comeback by saving five-straight set points, capped off by an ace from Briggs to make the score 24-22. However, the efforts were too little, too late, as Jacksonville won the first set 25-22.

The second set saw Pepperdine rally back from a three-point deficit to take a 14-13 lead by another Briggs ace. Neither team led by more than three points for the rest of the way. Trailing 23-21, Briggs served up back-to-back aces to tie the score, then Pravednikov saved a set point with her fourth kill of the frame to push the set to extra points. Although Pepperdine saved three set points, Jacksonville finally broke through to win the second set 28-26.

Early in the third set, Brynne McGhie‘s ace helped the Waves take a 5-3 lead, then another 3-0 run capped off by a Maggie Beauer kill put the Waves up 9-7. However, Jacksonville responded with a 6-1 run to flip the script and eventually take the third set. The Waves pulled within one point at 14-13, but the Dolphins prevailed for a 25-21 third-set win to finish off the sweep.

Pepperdine heads back to Malibu to host Lipscomb in the Asics Classic on Friday, Sept. 12. All schedule updates can be found on the women’s volleyball team’s schedule page on pepperdinewaves.com
