Two men were killed in eastern Brooklyn in separate incidents since Thursday, police said as they searched for those responsible.
According to NYPD officials, two 20-year-old brothers were shot around 2:40 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of Sutter and Euclid avenues in East New York. One of the brothers, Darius Coles, was shot in his chest and taken to Brookdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police said he lived a short walk from where he was shot.
Coles’ brother was taken to the same hospital with a bullet wound to his leg and a graze wound to his head, officials said, adding he was in stable condition. Police said they were looking for a man who fled the scene in a red track suit, white shirt and white shoes, and did not make any immediate arrests.
Just before 1 a.m. Friday, NYPD officers were called to Jamaica Hospital to investigate another fatal incident, which happened overnight in Cypress Hills, about a mile north of the shooting. Police said two men, ages 25 and 30, were brought to the hospital with stab wounds after they were attacked near Ridgewood Avenue and Crescent Street.
The 30-year-old, who was stabbed in his right armpit, was pronounced dead at the hospital. Officials did not immediately identify him as they worked to notify his family. The 25-year-old, who was stabbed in his stomach, was in stable condition.
NYPD data shows homicides have risen slightly in the 75th Precinct, which includes East New York and Cypress Hills, compared to this time last year. There were nine homicides through Aug. 31, up two from the same period in 2024.
Shootings in the precinct were down by more than 17%, roughly in line with the citywide decrease in gun violence this year, according to police. Felony assaults, which include stabbings, were down 8% in the precinct.
