JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Duval County Public Schools staff member received counseling on proper document disposal protocols after confidential student records were found scattered across a Northwest Jacksonville intersection in July.
The incident, which involved dozens of school documents containing student names and at least one discipline referral from 2023, occurred near the intersection of 45th Street and New Kings Road.
In response to the incident, DCPS officials confirmed the documents were “inadvertently discarded without following the district’s procedures for disposal of secured documents.”

According to DCPS, the proper procedure for handling sensitive documents includes:

Boxing and dating files for pickup after a three-year retention period

Coordinating with Bulls Bay for secure document pickup and disposal
The district acknowledged that in this case, the files were improperly stored and mistakenly treated as regular trash.
News4JAX reached out to one of the affected students whose name appeared on the scattered documents. The student said she did not receive any notice from DCPS.
The district has not yet responded to inquiries about whether they have contacted or plan to contact any of the affected students whose information was compromised in the incident.
DCPS officials stated they have “taken steps to ensure proper protocols are followed moving forward.”
