DALLAS — SMU scored two goals in the first half to knock off Sam Houston 3-1 at Washburne Soccer & Track Stadium on Sunday night.

The Mustangs scored in the 16th minute to take a quick lead then added another one before the end of the first half. The Mustangs continued their momentum in the second half, scoring their last goal in the 73rd minute.

The Bearkats (2-2-1) found a way to finally break through late in the second half. Siera Herbert sent a free kick into the right side of box and Ellie Morgan punched it in at the 84th minute to trim it to 3-1.

The goal was Morgan’s second of the season. She scored the game winner on Friday at Grand Canyon as the Bearkats picked up their first road win of the season 1-0.

SMU was offensive heavy on Sunday, taking nine shots at the goal but SHSU keeper Katie Bahn was able to post six saves on the night. The Mustangs had five corner kicks which helped to get them scoring opportunities to control the flow of the match.

Sam Houston hits the road again for its next match at McNeese on Thursday in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
