Update: State Route 17 has reopened.
On September 8, 2025, shortly after 4:30 a.m., New York State Police at Owego were dispatched by the Tioga County 911 Center to a crash involving a passenger vehicle and tractor trailer on State Route 17 east in the town of Nichols.
The investigation is still in its preliminary stages. Both a passenger car and a tractor trailer were traveling east on State Route 17 when the passenger car was rear-ended by the tractor trailer. Two people that were in the passenger are deceased. The operator of the tractor trailer was not injured.
No further information will be released pending family notifications.

Troopers were dispatched to the area shortly after 4:30 a.m.
All eastbound traffic is being diverted until further notice.
