Barcelona have had some bad news come their way over the past week with regard to injuries to players.

Alejandro Balde suffered a training injury last week, ruling him out potentially for a month, while it also emerged that Gavi’s knee problem was more concerning than initially feared.

Furthermore, Frenkie de Jong also picked up a problem while playing for the Netherlands last week, with Barcelona confirming earlier today that he has a ‘minor muscle injury’.

De Jong a doubt for Newcastle United trip

Earlier reports suggested that De Jong would not play against Valencia in La Liga later this weekend, with the idea being to have him ready for the UEFA Champions League opener vs Newcastle United.

However, according to Javi Miguel of AS, the 28-year-old midfielder is now seen as a doubt to face the Premier League club in Europe’s premier competition.

Barcelona face Newcastle on 18 September away at St. James’ Park in their first league phase match of the Champions League.

The La Liga title-holders do not wish to take any risks with De Jong’s recovery, and as such, his involvement for the trip to England is in doubt.

An important player for Barcelona, the Dutchman’s absence will be felt by Hansi Flick & co. The midfielder already missed a game this season – against Levante – due to the birth of his child and the team was far from their best on the night.

With Gavi also ruled out for a few weeks, everything points towards Marc Casado getting the nod alongside Pedri in the midfield double pivot.
