BRENHAM, Texas – The city of Brenham says they will be using harassment techniques to ward off nuisance vultures they say have caused property damage to several buildings in the area.
They city says they have received numerous calls over the last few months about the vultures in the S. Chappell Hill/Pecan/Kerr St areas. It has been noticed that around 200 or more vultures are hanging around the area throughout the day.
“To protect private property and prevent diseases, we have partnered with the Texas Wildlife Services Program to perform harassment techniques to break up the flock of vultures and move them out of this area. Since vultures are a protected species, harassment is a technique that is commonly used when situations like this arise,” the city said.
For one week from Sept. 8 – Sept. 12, the city will use pyrotechnics, such as screamers and bangs, at dusk and dawn to ward off the vultures. These pyrotechnics will be launched by the city’s animal control officers using handheld launchers.
“These are harmless to the general public and only harass or annoy the vultures to make them uncomfortable in this area. The City is notifying the public, adjacent neighbors, public safety and Brenham ISD as these screamers and bangs may be heard for several blocks away when harassment activities are being performed,” the city said.
