Moments later, police said, the man walked to the rear of the building, an area reserved for personnel, and was confronted by an officer assigned to building security.

“The individual took out a large butcher knife and began attacking the officer,” NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera said at a news briefing.

The officer was slashed in the face but managed to fight off the attacker, Rivera said. The suspect then fled the building, prompting a foot chase involving several officers, officials said.

Officers deployed a Taser, which did not stop him, according to police.

Rivera said the man later lunged at another officer with the knife, at which point “several officers discharged their firearms, and the male was struck numerous times,” according to Rivera

The man was taken to Brookdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said. Police said they recovered a 14-inch butcher knife from the scene.

The injured officer was transported to a hospital and is expected to recover. Rivera said she is “in good spirits.”

Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
