Today’s Big Stories
1. Adams brushes off poll showing huge lead for Mamdani in mayor’s race
Mayor Eric Adams today brushed aside questions about whether he should abandon his reelection bid, after a new New York Times/Siena University poll placed him at a distant fourth place in the mayoral race.
The survey showed Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani leading by a wide margin, with 46% of likely voters saying they planned to vote for him. Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo was second with 24%, followed by Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa in third with 15%. Adams, meanwhile, trailed with 9%.
2. Police search for suspect after Queens house fire kills two
Police are searching for a man suspected of setting a fire in Queens that killed two people in their 70s on Monday. The blaze broke out around 3:20 p.m. inside a home on 254th Street in Bellerose, the NYPD said.
Police said a 77-year-old man and a 78-year-old woman were found dead at the scene after firefighters extinguished the fire. Their names weren’t immediately released.
3. Judge blocks Adams from reopening ICE office on Rikers Island
A major setback for Mayor Adams came Monday when a judge blocked the reopening of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement office on Rikers Island.
New York State Supreme Court Justice Mary Rosado voided Adams’ executive order, citing concerns it was part of a deal with the Trump administration to dismiss the mayor’s criminal indictment.
4. NYPD, advocates split on what’s driving rise in youth shootings
Police are blaming Raise the Age, a 2018 law that moved 16- and 17-year-olds out of adult court, for an increase in youth violence and victims. NYPD data shows the number of shooting victims under 18 is up 81% when comparing the pre–Raise the Age year of 2018 to 2024. Juvenile shooters are up 92%, and gun arrests for minors are up 136% over the same time period.
But the New York Civil Liberties Union says the cause is not the law itself, but the lack of support that was supposed to come with it.
5. Citizen Action endorses Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado for New York governor in 2026
The progressive grassroots political organization Citizen Action has endorsed Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado in his bid for the Democratic nomination for governor in 2026.
The organization rallied in Syracuse today on a message of affordability and pushing back on big money in politics.
6. N.Y. may be paying Medicaid premiums for people living out of state, comptroller’s audit says
Nearly $1.2 billion in managed Medicaid premiums were paid for members who may have resided outside of New York, according to an audit released today by state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli’s office.
According to the audit, which examined a period between July 2017 and October 2024, auditors found that the state Department of Health did not properly check that Medicaid members were New York residents and waited too long to recoup improper payments.

Casino proposal divides residents at Midtown hearing
Is a casino a gamble for Midtown? That was the question at a public hearing Monday at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, where Silverstein Properties pitched its plan for a gaming and entertainment complex on 41st Street and 11th Avenue.
Some residents called the plan “fabulous,” while others worried the casino would change the neighborhood’s character. Developers say the project would also create 5,000 new permanent jobs.
