JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said a man was shot in downtown Jacksonville on Tuesday night after he stopped to give someone money, was asked to give more, and was shot when he refused.
JSO said they received a call around 3 p.m. about shots being fired near Main Street.
When officers arrived, they were unable to locate a scene or a victim. They say they later became aware of a shooting victim who was a walk-in at a nearby hospital, suffering from gunshot wounds to his left hand and chest.
They added that the man is in his 20s.
Police said they learned that the man in the hospital was driving on Duval Street and was turning on Washington Street. As he stopped at a traffic light, a man with a tattoo on his throat began asking him for money.
The driver rolled down his window and gave the man some money, police said. The man with the tattoo, believed to be in his 30s, then asked for more, to which the driver refused.
JSO said the man asking for money then pulled out a revolver and fired at least three times.
The driver took himself to the hospital and was reported to be in stable condition, the agency said.
Police have been unable to locate the suspect and said there is currently no crime scene.
The investigation into this incident is ongoing, police said.
