LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – Construction at Phoenix Park downtown has been going on since June 2024, and now we’re just over one week away from its official opening.
The park is located at Main and Limestone.
WKYT was invited for a tour on Wednesday to check out the amenities.
The park is located at Main and Limestone. It opens September 18 at 4:30 p.m.(WKYT)
“The park was built decades ago and many of its features were getting to the end of life,” said Michelle Kosieniak with Parks and Recreation.
Kosieniak said Phoenix Park became a forgotten space, until now. The one-acre park is full of family-friendly activities.
“We’ve got Gatton Park at Town Branch on one end of downtown. We’ve got our great Charles Young Park at the east end of downtown and this kind of sits in the middle,” said Kosieniak. “We thought, what a nice way if someone is visiting they can go to all three parks and it just really livens up the downtown.”
The park features picnic tables and swinging benches, a dog park, bathrooms, a stage for live music and a play area for endless climbing.
“This is actually rated for ages 5-12, but you can be 12 at heart.”
It has a three-story enclosed playground with multiple obstacle courses.
If you have kids younger than five years old they can use the smaller playground with sensory play, a slide and hand-crank music ball.
The park also has what’s called the Neos 360.
It’s an electronic game that can be played by one or two people. It tests your social awareness and peripheral vision.
Kosieniak said parks are vital to communities and she’s excited to see it fill up.
“Parks are the places that we gather as a community. They are places where we come outside of our homes and our own little social groups, and we meet the other people who live in our city.”
The fence around the park will be taken down next Thursday for a ribbon-cutting at 4:30 p.m.
Everyone is invited.
The park is open from daylight to 11 p.m.
