The lead candidate in the New York City mayor’s race is demanding lower prices for next year’s FIFA World Cup.

Zohran Mamdani started an online petition calling on FIFA not to use dynamic pricing, which is expected to drive up ticket prices because prices are based on demand from fans. FIFA plans on using that method. Mamdani is also calling for a cap on resale prices and that FIFA allow for 15 percent of tickets be at a discounted rate for local residents.

“Unlike the last three World Cups, there’s nothing set aside for residents. What this all means is the biggest sporting event in the world is happening in your backyard and you will be priced out of it.”

Eight World Cup matches including the final will be played at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
