Binghamton University hosts career fair to help students looking for post-grad employment

  • September 11, 2025

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WBNG) — From arts and communications, to business, marketing, and consulting, to engineering and IT, 144 companies were on Binghamton University’s Campus today to meet students looking to take the next steps in their post-graduate lives

Ranging from local organizations like the Broome County Department of Social Services to national brands like Pepsi Co, Frito-Lay, and Deloitte, students had a chance to learn about potential career opportunities.

“The biggest thing that our students like is that chance to network one-on-one with the employers, so they’re able to meet directly with them,” said Brandy Smith, Senior Associate Director of Binghamton’s Fleishman Career Center. “Whether or not things pan out, it gives them a chance to share a little bit about themselves and learn a little bit more about the company.”

The event has grown over the past decade. The university’s undergrad placement rate increased from 59% in 2014 to 89.3% in 2024.

Handshake, an online career platform that the university uses, has also seen a substantial increase in job & internship placement. According to Smith, there are currently 360,000 postings, an increase from 5,200 in 2014.

Kelli Smith said these events help alleviate the stress that can be caused by the job market.

“Whenever there is an economy where there is a little bit of a downturn, people just almost become paralyzed,” said Smith, the Assistant Vice President for student success at Binghamton University. “So I would say the other thing just to know is there are people wanting to make connections, and you just have to get the courage up, get the confidence up, and get out there and make some connections.”

Smith told 12 News that those entering the job market should keep an open mind above all, but to make sure that they are prepared with resumes and to practice their elevator pitch.

Smith added that students should follow up with recruiters to create a lasting impression and build connections with future employers.
