A major multi-vehicle crash in downtown Chicago early Thursday morning left multiple people injured and the busy Magnificent Mile blocked, NBC 5 traffic reporter Kye Martin said.
The crash occurred at Michigan and Ohio, with all lanes of Michigan Avenue blocked off in both directions between Ontario and Illinois, Martin said.
“This is a huge scene,” Martin said around 5:45 a.m. “You’re going to want to avoid Michigan Avenue for the next hour or so for sure.”
As of 5:30 a.m., photos and video from NBC 5 photographers at the scene showed multiple fire and police cars on scene, blocking off parts of the Magnificent Mile in front of the Aritzia clothing store. Cars could be seen with heavy damage as detectives worked to investigate.
About 6:10 a.m., Martin said additional police activity was reported nearby at Michigan and Chestnut, with CTA buses forced to reroute due.
According to two police sources, the crash involved two vehicles that both rolled over. As many as seven people were injured, sources said, with at least six people seriously injured.
No further details about injuries or the circumstances surrounding the crash were provided. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
