San Diego will open Hispanic Heritage Month with An Evening of Latinx Creativity, Culture & Community, a free family-friendly celebration taking place on Sunday, September 14, from 12:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Digital Gym Cinema and UC San Diego Park & Market Galleries.
Organized by UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies, Digital Gym Cinema, La Onda Arte Latino, the Consulate of Mexico in San Diego, and Fundación Sacal, the event will highlight cross-border artistic voices from the San Diego–Tijuana region and beyond. “This is about building bridges through art, music, and film while showcasing the diversity of Latinx creativity,” said Andy Gonzalez, independent curator with La Onda Arte Latino.
The day features the debut of a sculptural exhibition by renowned Mexican artist José Sacal, presented in collaboration with Fundación Sacal. Representatives of the Mexican Consulate in San Diego will offer reflections honoring Sacal’s legacy and the importance of binational artistic exchange.
On the film side, Digital Gym Cinema will host the San Diego premiere of Hola Frida! (2025), directed by André Kadi and Karine Vézina. The film offers a fresh perspective on the early years of Frida Kahlo, exploring her childhood, illness, and imaginative spirit. As part of the San Diego Latino Film Festival’s Arte Latino program, additional screenings will showcase independent films from Latin America and U.S. Latinx filmmakers.
A group art exhibition curated by Gonzalez will bring together more than a dozen artists from Mexico, Peru, Cuba, and Colombia, with artists present for informal talks and meet-and-greets. Live music and DJ sets will run throughout the day, alongside cultural participation from the Houses of Mexico, Panama, Peru, and Puerto Rico based in Balboa Park.
“This is meant to be more than an opening event. It’s a celebration of community, creativity, and heritage,” said a spokesperson for Digital Gym Cinema.
The event is free and open to the public. Guests are encouraged to RSVP via Eventbrite:
