FRISCO — Cowboys defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus has changes to make at cornerback for Sunday’s home opener against the Giants.
Starter DaRon Bland is most likely out for the Giants game with a sprained right foot. Bland hasn’t practiced the last two days after suffering the injury in Monday’s practice. Bland wore a protective boot on the foot earlier in the week, but didn’t on Thursday.
Replacing Bland will be Trevon Diggs, who didn’t start in the season opener because he was still in a ramp-up phase coming off knee surgery. Before the Bland injury, Diggs was expected to get more playing time against the Giants.
Now with Bland gone, Diggs will start outside with Kaiir Elam. When the Cowboys lost to the Eagles in the season opener, Bland moved to the slot when the team went with three corners.

Without Bland, finding the nickel corner is Eberflus’ mission.

“We have Reddy Steward,” Eberflus said Thursday. “He was there with us at [Chicago]. He ended up playing in a game or two for us. He knows the position. Zion [Childress] had a really good camp for us and we’ll keep evaluating it as we go throughout the week.”
Childress made the 53-man roster but was released as part of some roster movement. He was signed back to the practice squad and could be elevated for Sunday’s game to provide some depth or become the slot corner.
Steward played one game last season for the Bears and was claimed off waivers on August 27.
“It’s football and I’m getting acclimated with the play calls and stuff like that,” he said. “So I’m back on track with all that, so I feel good about it.”
