MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine women’s soccer (3-4-1), who received votes in this week’s United Soccer Coaches poll, scored twice in the first half against San Diego State (2-2-1) in a 3-2 loss Thursday afternoon at Tari Frahm Rokus Field.

“There were some excellent moments in today’s match,” Head coach Tim Ward said. “Disapointed with the result so we’re going to have to get better. We have a couple weeks now to get ready for WCC play, so we will come back better and stronger for it..”

With 56 percent of the possession throughout the 90 minutes, the Waves controlled the majority of the game.

Taking the early 1-0 lead in the 18th minute, Julia Quinonez capitalized on a penalty kick thanks to a foul drawn by Kyra Murphy just inside the top of the box.

Not even 10 minutes later, Murphy was threaded a ball by Quinonez, leading to a one-on-one with the Aztec goalkeeper. The senior buried the ball in the upper 90 and put the Waves up two goals with 20 minutes left in the half.

Right before the midway point, Pepperdine was called for a foul inside the box, allowing SDSU to get on the board with a penalty kick of their own. WIth 45 minutes gone, the Waves led 2-1.

Despite outshooting the Aztecs 9-5 in the second half, including 5-2 on goal, both shots on frame would come via set pieces to put the Aztecs up a goal with 20 to play..

Although Pepperdine took the advantage on corners 5-1, overall shots 16-6, and committed less fouls by a count of 12-18, it would not be enough as the visitors head back south defeating the Waves 3-2 in gut-wrenching fashion.

Quinonez and Murphy now both lead the Waves with three goals a piece. This is the pair’s second consecutive game with goals as they both found the back of the net against Arizona.

Up next, after about two weeks off, Pepperdine opens West Coast Conference play at home against Oregon State Sept. 24. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m., and the first 100 fans in attendance will receive a commemorative Pepperdine women’s soccer scarf. The live stream will be on ESPN+ (subscription required) and live stats will be available on pepperdinewaves.com.
