PHOENIX — For the first time in almost a month, Valley drivers will have to deal with freeways being closed over the weekend.
In its Weekend Freeway Travel Advisory for Sept. 12-15, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) warned that portions of Interstate 10 and the Loop 101 Pima Freeway will be shut down in the metro Phoenix area.

Portion of westbound I-10 to close in Phoenix over the weekend
The first closure ADOT warned drivers about will happen on I-10, west of downtown Phoenix near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
The westbound lanes of the freeway will be closed between the “Split” interchange near the airport and Seventh Avenue from 9 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Sunday.
This closure is due to scheduled maintenance and inspections that need to be completed.
Several ramps will also be closed. Those include:
- The ramp from westbound I-10 to southbound Interstate 17 at the “Stack” interchange west of 19th Avenue.
- The ramp from southbound State Route 51 to westbound I-10 at the “Mini-Stack” interchange just east of downtown Phoenix.
- The ramp from the westbound lanes of the Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway to westbound I-10 at the “Mini-Stack” interchange.
To get around this closure, ADOT said drivers on westbound I-10 should take I-17 north around downtown Phoenix and reconnect with I-10 at the “Stack” interchange.
Portion of northbound Loop 101 Pima Freeway to close over the weekend
ADOT also warned drivers that the northbound lanes of the Loop 101 Pima Freeway will be closed in Scottsdale between Shea Boulevard and Princess Drive/Pima Road from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.
This is due to the ongoing freeway widening project in that area.
The on-ramps to the freeway from Via de Ventura and 90th Street will also be closed over the weekend.
The off-ramp from the southbound Loop 101 at Raintree Drive is also closed and is scheduled to reopen in early November.
The freeway widening project in this area is expected to be completed early next year.
Other closures to note this weekend
ADOT’s advisory also warned drivers about the closure of several ramps in the Valley.
The department said that the ramps from both north- and southbound I-17 to the westbound lanes of the Loop 101 Agua Fria Freeway in north Phoenix will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 p.m. Saturday due to a ramp-widening project. During this closure, drivers can take Deer Valley Road or Union Hills Drive west to 35th Avenue, which connects with westbound Loop 101.
Multiple ramps on the Loop 202 Santan Freeway in Chandler and Gilbert will also be closed, according to ADOT.
The eastbound on-ramp at Cooper Road and the off-ramp at Gilbert Road will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Sunday.
The eastbound on-ramp at Arizona Avenue will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.
The westbound on-ramp at Val Vista Drive will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Sunday.
These closures, and several others that are already in place, are due to the ongoing freeway widening project in that area.
