A family in Elizabethtown has issued a personal plea for help for their young son. Twelve-year-old Isaiah Martin was born with a rare genetic disorder that affects the strength of his bones, confining him to a wheelchair. The disorder is called Osteogenesis Imperfecta. Isaiah’s mom, Vicky, says he was born with a severe form of the genetic disorder that can also cause fractures, along with a host of other symptoms. Vicky and her husband have helped Isaiah have a normal life — he gets up, goes to school, and hangs out with his friends. At school, Isaiah has a nurse to take care of his medical needs, but the family and the Elizabethtown School District are looking for an aide to be able to give him a little bit more assistance and help during the school day. Isaiah is entering sixth grade and is looking for a paraprofessional, otherwise known as a personal care aide, to help him learn, stay focused, and give him support in the classroom. However, like many other districts, Elizabethtown has a shortage and is struggling to find people to fill positions. So, Vicky took to Facebook, where she’s been keeping family and friends updated on Isaiah’s position since he was a baby, to ask for help. Vicky said she’s looking for “someone with a sense of humor. He always thrives when he has someone with a sense of humor, but who also can be an authority figure who can get him back on task. Someone who is kind, someone who is patient and shows up on time. He needs somebody to be consistent.” “You can spend every day with me,” said Isaiah in a video on his mom’s Facebook page. “We can make memories together. Wouldn’t it be amazing?” To learn more about the qualifications for this type of position and to access an application, click here.
