Paul Skenes is unlike anyone we’ve ever seen before throw a baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Skenes shut down the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday and didn’t allow a run over five innings at Camden Yards.

He lowered his ERA to 1.92 after allowing two hits and no walks, while striking out eight.

Prior to the no-decision, Skenes set another record. Skenes’ career 1.97 ERA is the lowest ever for a pitcher through their first 52 starts in the Live Ball Era (since 1920).

Skenes also surpassed 200 strikeouts (203) for the first time in his career. In 178 innings, Skenes is 10-9 with a 0.92 WHIP and well on his way to winning his first Cy Young Award.

Skenes has only allowed 67 runs in 53 starts. He lowered his career ERA to 1.94 following the game in Baltimore.

He finished third in Cy Young voting last year after winning Rookie of the Year thanks to a 1.96 ERA and 170 strikeouts in 2024.

He will likely make two to three more starts before the end of the season. Skenes’ next turn in the rotation comes on Monday at PNC Park against the Chicago Cubs.
