SAN DIEGO — Hot Wheels Monster Trucks Live is set to return to Pechanga Arena in San Diego this weekend with their new Glow-N-Fire show. The event promises thrilling monster truck action featuring fan-favorite trucks and drivers, including Joe Cypher, the world’s only paraplegic monster truck driver.
Cypher, 60, from Reno, Nevada, will be piloting the 5-Alarm Fire truck using special hand controls. A former Army Ranger, Cypher lost full use of his legs in a car accident but found a new adrenaline-pumping challenge in monster trucks.
“When I get in that, that’s my sanctuary,” Cypher said. “It’s where I want to be.”
The Glow-N-Fire show will feature popular Hot Wheels monster trucks like Mega Wrex, Tiger Shark and Bigfoot, along with freestyle motocross performances. Attendees can also participate in a pre-show party on the arena floor to get up close to the massive vehicles.
Cypher’s journey to becoming a monster truck driver is as impressive as the trucks themselves. Growing up playing with Hot Wheels and toy soldiers, he joined the Army and became a Ranger before a severe car accident changed his life.
“Though I be the lone survivor, I will complete the mission – that’s in our creed,” said Cypher, explaining how his military mindset helped him overcome his injury.
Now in his 31st year of driving monster trucks, Cypher uses a unique system of hand controls to operate his vehicle. He shifts with his right hand and accelerates with his left, demonstrating remarkable skill in maneuvering the massive truck.
As the monster trucks prepare to roar into San Diego, Cypher’s story serves as an inspiration, showing that with determination and adaptability, it’s possible to overcome significant challenges and achieve one’s dreams.
The Hot Wheels Monster Trucks Live: Glow-N-Fire show will take place at Pechanga Arena on Saturday and Sunday, featuring multiple performances each day. Tickets and additional information are available on the event’s website by clicking here.
