1. LIRR union workers authorize strike, but say it may be delayed
The LIRR Bargaining Coalition today announced that its members voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike, but said it won’t be happening this week.
Instead, the coalition is asking President Donald Trump to create an emergency board that would make recommendations to both the coalition and the MTA, with the goal of reaching a contract settlement.
2. Hochul names another nominee to Commission on Ethics in Lobbying and Government
Gov. Kathy Hochul has nominated Linda Scott, most recently the managing director/associate corporate secretary at JPMorgan Chase for 11 years, to sit on the state’s ethics watchdog panel, her office announced today.
As a nominee to the Commission on Ethics in Lobbying in Government, the public will have seven business days to provide comments on Scott and then she will be presented to the Independent Review Committee, which is composed of the deans of New York’s law schools, to review her qualifications.
3. Prosecutors say they’ll ask U.S. Supreme Court to restore conviction in Etan Patz missing child case
New York City prosecutors say they will ask the U.S. Supreme Court to restore a murder conviction in the 1979 disappearance of 6-year-old Etan Patz after an appeals court overturned the verdict in July.
The Manhattan district attorney’s made the disclosure in a court filing Sunday asking the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to hold off on enforcing its decision in the case of Pedro Hernandez. The former convenience store clerk became a suspect over 30 years after the first grader vanished.
4. Rangers and Red Wings Hall of Fame goaltender Ed Giacomin dies at age 86
Ed Giacomin, a Hockey Hall of Fame goaltender and one of the faces of the New York Rangers’ franchise in the 1960s and ’70s, has died. He was 86.
Giacomin died of natural causes, a Rangers spokesperson said after the organization learned of the news from his family. A spokesperson for the NHL Alumni Association said Giacomin died at his home Sunday night.
5. Savannah Bananas dance their way into Yankee Stadium
Fans packed into Yankee Stadium this weekend, with blue and white pinstripes swapped out for blue and yellow and America’s pastime replaced with the backflipping, bat-flipping, breakneck game known as “Banana Ball.”
NY1 went to the Savannah Bananas’ batting practice Friday. Known for their tricks and dance moves, all of the players on the exhibition team are skilled baseball players.
6. Husband-and-wife team share recipes in ‘Eat Small Plates’
In ‘Eat Small Plates: Vibrant, Shareable Dishes for Daily Joy,’ husband-and-wife team Ben and Zikki Siman-Tov share more than 90 recipes inspired by their New York City catering business, many of them rooted in Israeli flavors.
In an interview on “Mornings On 1,” the couple shared more about their culinary expertise and what inspired them to write their cookbook.
