SAN ANTONIO — The city has initiated a new program aimed at cooling down several neighborhoods by applying a special coating to the asphalt.

Crews have begun spraying this coating on East Huff Street on the south side, identified as one of the city’s hottest neighborhoods according to a study by the University of Texas at San Antonio.

This cool pavement initiative is a pilot program for Districts 2, 3, and 5, and will cover a total of 22 streets. The coating is expected to last up to four years.

In addition to the pavement project, the city is also exploring other heat mitigation strategies, such as installing cooling roofs and planting more trees.

City crews aim to complete the work in these three districts by October 22. If successful, the city plans to expand the cooling pavement project to other neighborhoods.
