Philadelphia’s historic Eastern State Penitentiary is offering more than just chills this season. The former prison-turned-national historic landmark has announced an engaging lineup of fall 2025 programming that blends history, art, culture, and social justice with opportunities for meaningful reflection and conversation. Whether you come for inspiring talks, interactive tours, or its famous haunted attractions, there’s something for everyone this autumn.
“This fall’s programming connects Eastern State’s history to the issues that matter most today, while also inviting our community to learn, reflect, and engage together,” said Dr. Kerry Sautner, President and CEO of Eastern State.
Democracy for All Week
The season kicks off September 17–21 with Democracy for All: Freedom of Expression Week, marking Constitution Day with programs on the power—and limits—of free expression behind bars. Guests can participate in fireside chats, art-making sessions, and guided discussions exploring how creativity and journalism have preserved dignity within prisons.
Justice 101 Returns
Also on September 17, the Justice 101 series launches its 2025–2026 season with Freedom Behind Bars: The First Amendment and Incarceration in America. This virtual program runs from 12:00–1:00 p.m. and offers expert perspectives and community dialogue on pressing issues in the justice system.
Special Tours and Art Programs
On September 19, visitors can join a special Guide-Led Tour & Artist Program with Mark Loughney, who will discuss art and incarceration before hosting a live portrait session in the prison’s cellblocks.
Halloween Nights at Eastern State
Starting September 19 through November 8, Eastern State’s signature Halloween Nights festival returns. Guests can brave five haunted houses, sip cocktails at themed bars, enjoy live performances, and explore the penitentiary during haunting historic tours.
More Fall Highlights
- CollegeFest (Sept. 21): Free admission day for students with registration.
- Jewish History Walking Tour (Sept. 22–Oct. 13): A self-guided exploration of Jewish life at the penitentiary, including the first synagogue built in a U.S. prison.
