Vietnam’s fixed broadband internet speed, powered largely by fiber-optic connections, rose to 13th place globally in July, its highest ranking ever.

According to Ookla, the company behind Speedtest, Vietnam has recorded one of the strongest growth trends globally, with both speed and ranking rising month after month.

In July its fixed broadband speed reached 250.45 Mbps, up from 173.6 Mbps in March when the country ranked 33rd.

This puts Vietnam close to Israel (251.57 Mbps) and Thailand (256.15 Mbps, ranked 10th) and takes it past Switzerland, Denmark and China. Singapore continues to lead the global rankings at 386.96 Mbps.

In terms of both fixed broadband and mobile internet Vietnam now ranks among the 20 fastest in the world. The latter reached a speed of 151.69 Mbps in July to rank 18th.

Experts attribute the surge to investments in infrastructure, including new undersea and cross-border fiber-optic cables, along with upgrades to domestic network systems by service providers.

“Telecom operators have significantly increased investments in fiber-optic infrastructure and services,” Vu Duc Huy of FPT Telecom said. “New technologies such as GPON, XGS-PON, Wi-Fi 6, and Wi-Fi 7 allow many times higher download and upload bandwidths than in the past.”

Since April major providers like VNPT, FPT and Viettel have raised their base household fixed broadband speeds to 300 Mbps, making higher speeds more accessible at affordable costs. Some such as VNPT and FPT also supply XGS-PON modems supporting speeds of up to 10 Gbps.

“This has significantly improved the fixed broadband market in Vietnam in recent times,” Huy said.

Vietnam is linked by six undersea cables with a total capacity of 80 Tbps.

This year also saw the launch of the country’s first domestically managed land-based international fiber-optic cable system, VSTN, in August, with a design capacity of 4 Tbps and expandable to 12 Tbps.
