1. New poll again shows Mamdani with double-digit lead over Cuomo in mayor’s race
A new poll from Marist University again shows Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani with a double-digit lead over former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the race for mayor in New York City.
The poll, which was released Tuesday, shows Mamdani with the support of 45% of likely voters, including those who are undecided. Cuomo, who is running on the independent Fight and Deliver Party line, received 24%, Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa polled at 17% and incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, who is also running as an independent, polled at 9%. Five percent of likely voters who participated in the poll were undecided.
2. Residents and businesses worry about crime on Canal Street
More than 800 people signed a petition calling for more permanent NYPD enforcement around Canal Street because of public safety and quality of life concerns.
While Canal Street is known as a marketplace for knockoffs, the concern is an escalation of crime, including drugs being openly sold, muggings and people defecating on the street.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul’s job approval and favorability ratings are up a little from last month and her lead in a potential race for governor against Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik has expanded with about a year to go until voters go to the polls, according to a Siena University poll of registered voters released Tuesday.
According to the poll, Hochul’s favorability rating reached 45-42%, the highest it’s been since January 2024. In addition, either a majority or plurality of voters believe Hochul works hard, demonstrates honesty, gets things done, provides decisive leadership and cares about people, the poll said.
