Seen & Heard: Saltmarsh sparrow spotted in Washington Market Park

SALTMARSH SPARROW SPOTTED IN WMP
S. sent a note: the birding community was very excited to see that a salt marsh sparrow — an endangered species — was spotted in Washington Market Park. (That’s her picture of birders descending on the park.) The Guardian has even made a documentary about one Rhode Island woman’s fight to preserve the species, which is facing extinction before 2050 due to elevated high tides.

TRIBECA ALLIANCE MEET & GREET
The newly reformed Tribeca Alliance will host a meet & greet for local merchants and the general public on Thursday, Sept. 18, 6:30p, at Laughing Man, 184 Duane.

LUNCH BOX FALL FOOD FAIR
The Downtown Alliance will host its annual restaurant food fair on Tuesday, October 7, from 11:30 till 2:30, at Fosun Plaza, 28 Liberty at Pine and William. The event is free to enter, but the lunches are offered at $10 each from restaurants around Fidi. More info here.

LOOKING BACK AT THE 9/11 MEMORIAL COMPETITION
The 9/11 Museum will host a seminar called “Designing Memory: A Look Back at the 9/11 Memorial Competition” on Thursday, September 25, from 5 to 6p. In January 2004, after an international competition that drew over 5,000 submissions from 63 countries, a final design for the 9/11 Memorial was chosen by a jury of 13 members. Introduced by CEO of Bloomberg Philanthropies Patricia E. Harris this program brings together two jury members — 9/11 family member Paula Berry and historian James E. Young — to share the principles that guided their decision-making. Free tickets here.
