For the first time in nearly 30 years, Cayuga Community College Women’s Basketball will have a new leader on the sidelines when the Spartans open the 2025–26 season.
Doug Carter, former head coach at Wells College, has been named to succeed longtime coach Jim Alberici, who retired this summer after 27 seasons guiding the program. Carter brings more than two decades of coaching experience across NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA levels.
“I’m incredibly excited for the opportunity to lead the Spartans’ program,” Carter said. “My goal is to help our student-athletes succeed in the classroom, on the court, and in whatever steps they take after graduating.”
Athletic Director John Rizzo said Carter’s experience and track record of improving programs made him the right choice. “Doug’s passion for the sport and his drive for our student-athletes to be successful excites me for the future of our program,” Rizzo said.
Carter’s career includes head coaching roles at the Community College of Allegheny County–South, University of Virginia’s College at Wise, University of Maine at Presque Isle, and Wells College, along with assistant coaching stops at several other institutions. His teams have set program records for wins at multiple schools.
He inherits a Spartans team that finished 11–15 last season, highlighted by a road playoff win over Corning Community College in the Region III tournament.
