SAN DIEGO – The murder trial of a defendant accused of inflicting a punch that killed a man in Ocean Beach in 2023 has been set for next year.
According to witnesses in the preliminary hearing, Andrew Phillip Restrepo, 34, ran up to Sean Ellis Glenn, 34, and hit him so hard with his fist in a single punch that it caused Glenn’s death three months later in a hospital.
Witnesses described it as “a Superman punch” that caused Glenn to fall and strike his head on the road outside a pizza shop in the 5000 block of Newport Avenue on May 10, 2023.
Restrepo passed by Glenn as he lay in the street and then took a photo of an ambulance at the scene, according to the District Attorney’s office.
Melyssa Brazil, who works for the DA’s office, testified that she went through Restrepo’s cell phone and discovered that he sent that image to approximately five people.
Brazil testified that she also found text messages Restrepo had exchanged with his cousin in which he said he “knocked someone out.” Restrepo considered fleeing to Colombia, according to the text messages.
In addition, a videotape shows Glenn leaving the pizza shop and brushing Restrepo, who was entering the restaurant. Numerous witnesses said Glenn was intoxicated and he did not notice that he had touched Restrepo, who took offense.
The victim, who worked in the computer industry, never regained consciousness and lapsed into a coma, dying from brain injuries.
Also on Wednesday, attorney Danesh Tandon, who represents Restrepo, asked San Diego Superior Court Judge Jeff Fraser to reduce the $2 million bail to a lower amount. The judge turned him down after Deputy District Attorney Jessica Sutterley argued against it.
Restrepo was arrested three months after the crime, on Aug. 27, 2024. He waived his right to a speedy trial and has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The defedant is also charged with felony assault, after punching and injuring a passenger aboard an MTS bus in the Midway area. Video surveillance showed Restrepo yelling for no apparent reason, and an older man expressed his irritation.
As the man started to leave the bus, the footage showed Restrepo punching the man and knocking him to the floor. The victim was treated at the scene. The DA’s office has apparently not been able to find him since the incident.
Restrepo’s trial is set for Feb. 2, 2026.
