Large thunderstorms produced lots of rain and lightning Thursday in parts of San Diego County, especially from Palomar Mountain to Borrego Springs, where dozens of lightning bolts were reported, the National Weather Service said.

The wild weather was tied to former Tropical Storm Mario, which sent a big, unstable plume of moisture into Southern California.

The system started to clear out of the region early Thursday evening and was expected to have largely moved out of Southern California by Friday morning.

Through 5 a.m. Thursday, the heaviest rainfall had been at Palomar Mountain, which received 1.37 inches of precipitation.

Here is a sample of other totals: Fashion Valley, 0.58 inches; Miramar, 0.52 inches; Mount Laguna, 0.49 inches; Kearny Mesa, 0.45 inches; San Diego International Airport, 0.45 inches; Miramar Lake, 0.38 inches; Valley Center, 0.37 inches; Escondido, 0.36 inches; National City, 0.35 inches; La Mesa, 0.35 inches; Vista, 0.33 inches; Poway, 0.24 inches; Ramona, 0.22 inches.
