Want to share your two cents about Ferguson Road? Here’s your chance.
Dallas Department of Transportation and Public Works has been studying the 6.5-mile principal arterial roadway “to identify improvements that will advance mobility and safety for all modes of transportation along Ferguson Road and will prioritize those improvement projects for near- and long-term completion,” according to the City’s website.
The Department of Transportation and Public Works held a public meeting on Sept. 2 and is asking locals to complete a survey by Friday, Oct. 3. The survey says there is funding for three additional pedestrian crossings and asks respondents to rank a list of 10 choices: Andover Drive, San Paula Avenue, San Marcus Avenue, Crest Ridge Drive, Pasteur Avenue, between Sweetbriar Drive and Beck Avenue, Tudor Place/Lanecrest Drive, Graycliff Drive, Charles Street, and Riek Road. Those taking the survey are also asked if there are any other locations where they’d prefer to see pedestrian crossings.
The recommendations outlined in the presentation for the Sept. 2 meeting are:
- Replacing and/or installing pedestrian curb ramps
- Installing/replacing traffic signs to enhance retroreflectivity and nighttime visibility
- Refreshing crosswalks and lane striping
- Removing and replacing existing median curb with 6-inch curb
- Removing existing streetlights and raised foundations in the median; installing new LED streetlights with break-away poles
- Installing left-turn lanes at Shiloh Road/Fenwick Drive (under design)
Removing and replacing existing signals
- Millmar Drive (awarded for construction)
- Gus Thomasson Road (under construction)
- Joaquin Drive (under construction)
- Barnes Bridge Road (under design)
- Woodmeadow Parkway (under construction)
- St. Francis Avenue (under design)
- Highland Road (construction complete)
- RL Thornton Freeway (funding to be identified in the future)
Installing new traffic signals
- Fenwick Drive/Shiloh Road (under design)
- San Medina Avenue (under design)
Installing new pedestrian hybrid beacon:
- Materhorn Drive (under design)
Adding and repairing sidewalks using grant funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program:
- Buckner Boulevard (Loop 12) to Peavy Road
- Near San Marcus Avenue
- Peavy Road to Hibiscus Drive
- Sweetbriar Drive to Lanecrest Drive
- Tudor Place to Lakeland Drive
- Forest Oaks Drive to St. Francis Avenue
- Hollybush Drive to Forest Hollow Park
- Between Ash Grove Way to Forest Hollow Park on the north side of Ferguson Road
- Between Forest Hollow Park to Hollybush Drive on the north side of Ferguson Road
What probably won’t be happening is a reconfiguration of Ferguson Road from a six-lane to a four-lane street, according to the latest public meeting presentation.
“Currently unsignalized intersections are experiencing long delays on the side streets,” the presentation reads. “A lane reduction will further increase the delay and result in unacceptable traffic operations.”
Adding a bicycle lane is also not recommended.
