ANAHEIM, Calif. – MMA Junkie is on the scene and reporting live from Saturday’s boxing event headlined by Jake Paul vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., which takes place at Honda Center and streams on DAZN pay-per-view.

The fight marks Paul’s first since his win over legend Mike Tyson last November in what was the most-streamed sporting event on Netflix, with an estimated 65 million viewers. Paul (11-1), 28, is on a five-fight winning streak – against Nate Diaz, Andre August, Ryan Bourland, Mike Perry, and Tyson – since suffering his first loss to Tommy Fury in February 2023.

Chávez Jr. (54-6-1), the son of Mexican icon Julio Cesar Chavez, last held a major world title in 2012. The 39-year-old will enter on a two-fight winning streak after most recently defeating former UFC fighter Uriah Hall by unanimous decision last July.

The Paul vs. Chavez event also marks the return of former UFC champion Holly Holm’s return to the ring as she takes on Yolanda Vega. Holm 43, was a standout boxer before starting her UFC career and in 2022 was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Holm’s fight against Vega will mark her first competition since she departed the UFC in January.

Jake Paul vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. round-by-round results

Round 1 – Not a whole lot of action in the first three minutes, but it was mostly Paul controlling th center of the ring and landing the best punch when he clipped Chavez Jr. with an overhand right.

Round 2 – This round ends up just as light on action as the first round until Paul finally lands something strong with about 20 seconds left. At the beginning of the round, the referee made Paul’s corner wipe their fighter’s face.

Round 3 – Chavez Jr. seems content to be on his back foot. Paul isn’t necessarily pressuring him, just taking what Chavez Jr. is giving him. Paul’s attacks are long and coming from the outside. On the broadcast they show Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. looking frustrated as all hell. Can’t blame him.

Round 4 – It took four rounds, but Chavez Jr. finally threw and landed a combination in what was the best sequence of the round. Still, Paul hasn’t looked all that uncomfortable through the first 12 minutes.

Round 5 – A couple of early straight lefts snap Chavez Jr.’s head back, but he responds with two-punch combo and lands an overhand right, forcing Paul to clinc. THe action is briefly stopped at 1:34 after Chavez Jr.’s head spears Paul in the gut while closing distance, resulting in a headlock. All in all, a close round. Maybe the closest of the fight so far … and there was some action.

Round 6 – Paul sneaks in a nice uppercut in the first 45 seconds. Maybe that woke up Chavez Jr. a bit, because he finally picked up the pace for the rest of the round, landing a couple of hard punches and keeping Paul retreating … until he retaliated with his own combo. Most action of the fight so far, easily.

Round 7 – Paul controls most of the three rounds from the outside. If Chavez Jr. wins, it’ll have to be by knockout or TKO. Doesn’t seem likely.

Round 8 – Chavez Jr., the few times he has landed in this fight, has mostly been one punch at a time. It happens in this round, which gets a rise from the crowd, but then Paul recovers and fights back stronger. It looked like he was loading up for the knockout uppercut but missed when he threw it.

Round 9 – Chavez Jr. is livid that the referee isn’t calling out Paul for what he belives are low blows. Chavez Jr. is pushing the pace and finally, maybe making Paul uncomfortable for the first time. Paul’s hands are low, and Chavez Jr. finally wins a round by landing several hard punches in the final minute. Could be an interesting 10th?

Round 10 – Perhaps the toughest test of Paul’s career, looked tired, started to fade, absorbed quite a few punches, but he got through it and will come out victorious.
