Police said the 16-year-old was in the crosswalk when he was hit by the truck.
“We just saw him hit the windshield and go over the windshield,” said Matthew Gonzalez.
Gonzalez and his friends, all students at John Jay High, were at a restaurant across the street when it happened.
“He was just on the ground, it was just sad,” said another student.
His mother says he underwent emergency brain surgery to stop the bleeding.
Doctors removed part of his skull to relieve the swelling. He’s expected to be in the ICU for a month with a long recovery ahead.
The driver who hit him stayed on the scene and is not expected to be charged.
